Welcome to the world of KDP The FREE Optical Design and Analysis Program Download and Installation Instructions **************************************************************** KDP and all its documentation is FREE via the WKDPBASE.EXE, WKDPUP1.EXE and WKDPUP2.EXE files. See the download and installation instuctions below. The file WKDPUP1.EXE and WKDPUP2.EXE contain files to initially install as well as update to the latest version of KDP. The file WKDPBASE.EXE contains files only needed during the initial installation of KDP. The file rs40eng.exe is a FREE (from Adobe), self-extracting version of Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0. This is needed for the HELP menuof KDP to operate properly. Follow Adobe's download instructions and install Adobe Acrobat Reader in the same directory into which you installed KDP. KDP is upgraded as necessary to keep it useful. Upgrade announcements are made on the sci.optics newsgroup. We offer free friendly help via email for KDP. Just email questions to us and we will reply as quickly as we can. **************************************************************** We sell optional in-depth, personalized user support for KDP is available at $300.00/year/user. This is intended for the professional optical designer. It is not necessary in order to use KDP. User support includes but is not limited to: 1. Expanded program capacity: 500 lens surfaces versus 25 surface in the free distribution. 75 zoom positions versus 5 surface in the free distribution. 999 macros versus 10 macros in the free distribution. 1024 lines per macro versus 32 in the free distribution. 2. Full printed documentation. 3. CD-ROM which includes support for text and graphics hardcopy and file generation. 4. Access to KDP source code. 5. Our help with KDP so you can solve your problems in an efficient manner. 6. Custom new feature addition and express bug repairs. **************************************************************** (CD-ROM INSTALLATION AND UPDATING OF KDP) If you received a CD-ROM, copy all of the files on it to the root directory of the disk from which you wish to run KDP. If you downloaded the files from one of the two FTP sites, move those files to the root directory of the disk from which you wish to run KDP. KDP, version 4.0, must be fully installed. There is NO update path from earlier versions. If an earlier version of KDP is installed, DO NOT, inatall this new version in the same directory structure as this will erase all old lenses and macros. More about this in a minute. Move the files WKDPUP1.EXE, WKDPUP2.EXE and WKDPBASE.EXE to the root directory of your hard disk. These files are self-extracting WINZIP files. One at a time, double click on them. By default, KDP will be self-extracted into the \WINKDP directory. Unless you have a really good reason to use a different directory, use the \WINKDP directory. After all files finish self-extracting, double click on the rs40eng.exe file in order to install Adobe Abrobat Reader 4.0. Without it, you won't be able to access help in KDP. Earlier versions of Acrobat Reader won't work. When updates are available via the WKPDUP1.EXE and WKDPNU2.EXE files, use the same self-extraction process to install the updates they contain. **************************************************************** Paid User Support File A001 If you are under paid yearly support, the file A001 was sent to you via email and via disk. Save a copy of that file to a backup floppy. Without a copy of A001 in the directory in which you installed KDP, KDP will operate as the restricted free distribution rather than the full user supported distribution. The A001 file tells KDP when your user support for the year runs out. It assumes that if there is no A001 file, then you are using an unsupported version of KDP and you won't have the full capacities or the ability to output hardcopy text and graphics. Paid User Support Hardcopy Manuals If you are under paid yearly support, you will receive on printed copy of the KDP manuals per year at the time of user support renewal. You get one printed copy per year. Additional copies are $150.00 including shipping. **************************************************************** (Saving old lenses and macros) If you have an earlier version of KDP, go to its directory and start it. At the command prompt, type "LIBSAVE". Then type "MACSAVE". Exit the program. Copy the new files LIBSAV.DAT and MACSAV.DAT from the old directory to the new directory into which you just installed the new version of KDP. Double click on the KPD icon in the new directory. After KDP starts, type "LIBREST" and "MACREST" at the command prompt and your old lens and macro libraries will be correctly moved to KDP version 4.0. **************************************************************** (Version 4.18 and previous Plot Libraries) If you are upgrading an earlier version of KDP to version 4.18, you MUST re-initialize the PLOT LIBRARY. If you have plots from earlier versions of KDP in the PLOT LIBRARY, you will either need to make hard copies of them with the earlier version of KDP or you will need to output the files to other graphics file formats with the GRAOUT command. To initialize the PLOT LIBRARY, start KDP, then type: PLOT NEW;IPF;PROCEED That's all that needs be done. **************************************************************** For all inquiries, contact us at: Engineering Calculations email: engcalc@engcalc.com Visit out home page at: http://www.engcalc.com Get all KDP files at: www.engcalc.com or from the ftp location: or ftp://www-ifia.fzk.de/kdp After KDP installation: STARTING KDP: After installation, you can double click on the file KDP.EXE, double click on the KDP icon or you can make a shotcut to the KDP icon and then place it on your Windows desktop and double click on it.
