H band observations of fragments Vainu Bappu Observatory, Kavalur

We have observed a flash in the IR H band (1.65 mu) corresponding to the impact of the fragment `s' of comet SL9 on Jupiter on 21 July 94 with 0.75 m telescope, Vainu Bappu Observatory, Kavalur. The brightness began to increase sharply with rise time of about 2 sec at 15:19:20 UT. The flash lasted 32 sec with a peak brightness of about - 2.7 mag in the H - band.

In the optical region, the impact region 1 s fragment was detected on the limb by 15:31 UT on 21 July from the images obtained with 1-meter telescope.
