We observed extremely strong CO overtone band emission in a 2.2-2.4
micron spectrum of the R impact at approximately UT 5:45 July 21 with
the CGS4 spectrometer at UKIRT, Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The CO emission
faded on a timescale of 10 minutes. The overtone emission implies
gas temperatures of several thousand degrees K.
