Impact R and Plume Observations from TMO

21 July 1994 (UT): Table Mountain Observatory 1.2m Wrightwood, CA

We observed Jupiter from 3:20 - 6:43 UT at TMO in 8900, 9450,7270,7500, B and V filters. From 3:20 UT to 3:32 UT, we observed four bright spots in the 8900A filter associated with fragments F (on the eastern limb), E very close behind, P2 just crossing the central meridian and L(?) rising over the western limb, and appeard elongated with a fainter spot southeast of it. We were clouded out from 3:35Ut to 4:45 UT. We observed impact sites of P2, L and G from 4:45 UT to 5:UT. We saw the plume rising from impact of fragment R at 5:30 UT, reaching a maximum ~5:40 UT and diminished considerably by 5:51 UT when we observed a curved feature off the limb. The impact site of G appeared to be nearly coincident with that of D (the D site seemed fainter); the impact site of fragment R appeared on the disk at 6:12 UT and was followed by impact site of Q1 at 6:35 UT. Observations continued till 6:43 UT. These images were recorded in the 8900 A filter, with exposure times varying from 5 to 30 sec.
