SAAO Observations July 19

Spots at the sites of impacts K, G, H, F, E, A, and C were observed by Kaz Sekiguchi and Brian Carter using the PtSi infrared camera and 0.75 m telescope for imaging at 2.2 microns (K). Spot C is surrounded by a large dark ring. All these spots still appear bright at this wavelength, with C the least intense and G the brightest. Jupiter images were obtained covering the period when Jupiter was sufficiently high in the sky. The PtSi camera was developed at SAAO by Ian Glass in collaboration with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and the University of Tokyo, using a Mitsubishi chip.

Peter Martinez of the University of Cape Town used the 0.5 m telescope for high speed photometry in U of the disk of Jupiter. The airmass was rather high, and it is not certain whether the impact of fragment L was detected.
